I was contacted by clients Miranda and Guy who have a stunning home in Forest Hill, London, to hand-paint their bespoke wall units
I’ve worked for the family before so I knew Miranda would have a clear idea on colour; I was right she had already chosen Farrow and Ball downpipe. Farrow and Ball produce the most amazing colours but I much prefer to use Tikkurila furniture paint, specifically designed for kitchens and bathroom furniture, extremely hard wearing with 3 different finishes, matt , eggshell and gloss.
The cabinets sadly had been very poorly made and even worse had been primed by the joiner. The first coat is the most important coat of all because it is so hard to remove the deep brush strokes from the final coat. I sanded everything back to bare wood and primed again In otex adhesive primer tinted in downpipe. Having a primer in downpipe really helps to achieve a really deep finish. It was a gloomy day in Forest Hill but It didn’t matter because I always use my high intensity lighting, which on this occasion allowed me to identify all of the deep gouges and imperfections left by the joiner.
Miranda wanted the eggshell finish, which I achieved useing Helmi 30 an amazing product from Finland . Between all coats I use Mirka Gold 1000 grade sandpaper which helps me achieve the glass like finish.
Any cabinet painter using the system above will produce a flawless finish. As you can see by the above photo the results speak for themselves – a fantastic piece of bespoke furniture.
If you have any bespoke furniture like the one above and are considering painting it, please get in touch. All you need to do is email across some photos showing each cabinet run. I can then forward to you a full and concise quote.
