Hand Painted kitchen Dulwich London: I was contacted to hand paint a bespoke locally made kitchen for clients Emma and Simon. The interior designer had chosen Hague Blue for most of the units and Strong White for 4 walls units. Both colours are by Farrow&Ball and really complement each other really well.
Wherever possible I like to paint the doors and drawers in my workshop. This allows me to keep disruption to the kitchen to a minimum. Also I have a controlled environment to produce a flawless finish. The kitchen is the heartbeat of the house and where the kettle is kept! I do as much as I can not to disrupt the family environment.
The first day I dismantle the kitchen and take it back to my workshop where I start the preparation. In this case as it was newly built and extremely well made with very little filling necessary. Once all imperfections were filled, I applied the priming coat, I always use Otex adhesive primer which can be tinted to match the finish colour. Once I had all the units primed, I always sand down between coats with a 1000 grade paper, it’s a really fine paper, just enough enough to key the paint but not remove it.
Next stage to apply the two top coats, again I always use the same Tikkurila intact, it’s only been out 8 months but it’s an incredible paint hard wearing with a beautiful finish. Depending on what type of finish, ie sheen level, everyone has a different idea of what type sheen level they would like. Some say flat, some say shiny but I like to mix flat and high sheen levels together to produce a completely unique finish, so only you will have that finish. Once I’ve finished painting the kitchen, I use the same process with the carcass. Next, the best part, refit the kitchen.
